Plasma Project is a student-led blood donation initiative founded by Leena Senska, rooted in her interest in psychology and her commitment to helping others through understanding, empathy, and education. Leena recognized that while many high school students want to give back, blood donation often feels intimidating—especially for first-time donors who experience anxiety or misconceptions about the process. Rather than viewing this hesitation as a lack of willingness, she saw it as a psychological barrier that could be addressed and solved.
Drawing on her interest in how people process stress and fear, Leena designed Plasma Project to make blood donation feel approachable and manageable. By clearly explaining what happens before, during, and after donation, and by creating a calm, supportive environment, the initiative helps students feel more in control of the experience. Reducing anxiety, for Leena, is not separate from service—it is the service. When students understand what to expect and why their contribution matters, fear gives way to confidence and purpose.
Plasma Project partners with local high schools to host organized, student-friendly blood drives and operates in collaboration with RWJUH Somerset, where Leena serves on the Junior Board of Directors. Through this partnership, she bridges student leadership with medical expertise, ensuring that each drive meets professional standards while remaining accessible to young donors. The blood collected supports hospital patients in need of transfusions for trauma care, surgeries, cancer treatment, and chronic illness.
At its core, Plasma Project reflects Leena’s belief that helping others begins with understanding them. By addressing the emotional experience of giving blood, especially the anxiety of the action, she has created an initiative that not only saves lives, but also empowers students to see themselves as capable contributors to their community.
